WELCOME TO OUR PARENTS' CORNER

Our Policy:

The Parenting Center is located in the front commons area and in the main office. This site for parents and guardians of child development through second grade students provides information regarding our academy.  Other information may include tips for parental involvement, safe and healthy living and academic support.

School Volunteers:

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact our superintendent, Ms. Gwendolyn Smith at (803) 661-5143.  We encourage you to volunteer.  Your help and support is necessary in order to promote excellence in our school.  All volunteers must be cleared through a SLED background check prior to serving at the academy.

Parent Involvement:

CORE ACADEMY encourages parents to be as active and involved as possible in the academy environment of their children. Parents are encouraged to help chaperone field trips, schedule class visitations and attend school programs.

All parents are encouraged to become members of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Volunteers are always welcome and needed. Parents are asked to attend all PTA meetings. This is a vital part of our academy. Parents may share their concerns and offer suggestions. All parents are eligible to hold an office in the Parent Teacher Association. The yearly registration per family is $10.00.

Class Visits:

Core Academy encourages parents to be integrally involved in all aspects of their child’s academic life. We have an open door policy with respect to parents being in the classroom and we welcome such visits as long as they do not distract from the learning that is taking place within the classroom.

Visitors:

For the safety of the children, ALL VISITORS (INCLUDING PARENTS) MUST SIGN IN AT THE ACADEMY OFFICE. The CORE ACADEMY doors are locked during the school day.  Visitors will not be allowed on the academy campus or in the buildings unless they have signed in at the main office and received a visitor’s badge to wear during their visit.  Please remember to sign out upon departure.

About our Payment Schedule:

We reserve the right to cancel services to parents who have overdue payments. Parents wishing to pay bi-weekly or monthly must pay in advance. You are actually paying for your child’s slot. Therefore, weekly fees are due whether your child is present or not.

Tuition will be charged for students who attend the academy on the last full week of the Winter Holidays and during Spring Break for Core Academy and After-School students. There will also be a charge for Summer Break Camp.

The Board of Education will determine on a case-by-case basis whether payments of weekly fees can be reimbursed due to hospitalization of a child or other extenuating family circumstances. The parent / guardian will be required to write a letter and submit the appropriate documentation for the board to consider. Notification of the board's decision will be returned in writing.

General Information

REPORT CARDS:

Communication between parents and teachers is important. Interim reports will be sent home the fifth week of the nine week grading period. Report cards will be sent home every nine weeks.

At the direction of the Core Academy Board of Education, our superintendent, principal and teachers established a grading system at all levels that reflects achievement-based mastery of skills at a student’s instructional level.

Progress reports list a student’s number of absences and tardies. Core Academy uses the following marking system based on the South Carolina Uniform Grading Policy as required by state law:

93 to 100        A

85 to 92          B

77 to 84          C

70 to 76          D

0 to 69            F

CORE ACADEMY issues progress reports (report cards) every nine weeks. The school calendar you received gives the specific dates. A calendar is also available in the main office. Final grades on the progress report are official and remain in the student’s permanent record.

TEST & EXAMS:

In addition to classroom tests and quizzes, students will receive proficiency tests periodically and a standardized test at the end of each school year in the spring.

HOMEWORK:

Core Academy is dedicated to teaching children and to motivate them to improve their academic skills. To reinforce this, regular homework will be assigned. The length of the assignment will vary depending upon grade level.
